Los Reyes Magos

¿Quiénes son los Reyes Magos? También llamados Magos de Oriente, sus orígenes nos llevan hasta la Biblia.

Así, en el capítulo dos, versículo 1-12, del Evangelio de San Mateo, se narra el camino que hicieron tres 'magos' (denominados así porque en aquella época se conocía como 'magos' a los 'sabios' o astrónomos) que fueron siguiendo una estrella hasta llegar a Belén.

Allí visitaron y ofrecieron tres regalos al recién nacido Jesús: oro, incienso y mirra. Aunque las escrituras no explican de dónde procedían los tres reyes, todo indica que vinieron desde Babilonia o Persia, lugar en el que los magos tenían una gran influencia.

Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar

Tampoco se conoce a ciencia cierta cómo eran o cómo se llamaban.

En el siglo XIV, el monje benedictino Beda, doctor de la iglesia, describió a los Reyes Magos en un manuscrito: 'Melchor, anciano de blancos cabellos y larga barba del mismo color; Gaspar, más joven y rubio; y Baltasar, un señor negro'.

De esta manera, Beda los identificó como representantes de Europa, Asia y África.

En cuanto al número de Reyes Magos, se acepta el de tres, Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar, aunque en distintos lugares se supone que fueron dos, cuatro, y hasta doce, como en Armenia.

Del mismo modo, es incierto su destino después del encuentro con la familia de Jesús en Belén.

Otro enigma es la estrella que les condujo hasta el pesebre del Niño. Para muchos científicos no se trataba más que de un cometa o meteoro luminoso.

Existen muchas teorías que intentan profundizar lo que está escrito en la Biblia, pero lo que sí sabemos con seguridad es que, con el tiempo, sus Majestades los Reyes Magos se convirtieron en unos personajes muy queridos por todos los niños.

La carta a los Reyes Magos

Todos los años, semanas antes de la llegada de la Navidad, los niños empiezan a pensar en los regalos que desean que les traigan los Tres Magos.

Es el turno de escribir la carta a los Reyes Magos, un momento de enorme ilusión y fantasía para los más pequeños. En ella, los niños cuentan cómo se han portado a lo largo del año y qué regalo les gustaría recibir el 6 de enero.

No existe un modelo único, sino que cada niño puede elegir el formato que más le guste; al igual que son múltiples las formas de enviar sus peticiones. Unos eligen depositarlas en el buzón de los supermercados o las tiendas de juguetes, y otros les piden a sus padres que la sellen y envíen por el correo convencional.

Sea cual sea el camino elegido, no os olvidéis de dejar algo de comer y beber a los Reyes y sus camellos. Algo de dulce o frutas con un poco de agua seguro que les vendrá muy bien para reponer fuerzas.

La cabalgata de reyes

La Cabalgata de Reyesse celebra en todas las ciudades españolas, y algunas mexicanas, la tarde del 5 de enero. Los tres Magos, acompañados de sus pajes y ayudantes, desfilan en carrozas por las calles de los municipios lanzando caramelos a todos los niños, representando el camino que recorrieron en su día hasta Belén.

Es una noche mágica en la que se mezclan la tradición con la fe y la esperanza; la ilusión de los niños con la adoración de los Reyes al niño Jesús.

Los regalos de reyes

Cada año, durante la madrugada del día 6 de enero, los Reyes Magos acuden a las casas de los niños para dejarles sus regalos, del mismo modo que llevaron oro, incienso y mirra al niño Jesús.

Según la tradición, una de las cosas exigidas por los Tres Reyes para que los niños reciban sus regalos es que se hayan portado correctamente y hayan sido buenos durante el año.

Los que cumplen esas exigencias reciben regalos, pero los que no se comportan como deberían, en lugar de regalos reciben carbón, un carbón dulce que simboliza la necesidad de que el niño cambie su actitud.

La Rosaca de reyes

Después de una noche mágica nada mejor que despertar con un dulce sabor en la boca. Mientras los turrones son los protagonistas de los postres navideños, el La rosca de Reyes es el protagonista de la mesa del 6 de enero.

La rosca es un bollo de masa fina con forma de anillo, más o menos redondeado, decorado con trozos de frutas confitadas de muchos colores. Y desde el último tercio del siglo XX suele añadirse nata, crema, chocolate, trufa o cabello de ángel en su interior.

Este dulce típico del 6 de enero esconde dentro de la masa un pequeño regalo. En épocas remotas, aquel que encontrara la sorpresa se convertía en el rey de la reunión, pero hoy en día se dice que la persona que coma el pedazo que contiene un ni~o de plastico tendrá que hacer los tamales para el 2 de febrero el dia de la Candelaria

The Gifts of the Magi, and their story.

As the story goes, the three magi that traveled from afar, brought rather regal gifts for baby Jesus. From the gospel of Matthew's account, we know a few things about these wise men, or Magi.

These wise men were traveling to Jerusalem, during the days of Herod the king. It seemed normal to them to contact the King to inquire more about the King of the Jews that had been born. King Herod found it very interesting and inquired about the star that led them there. The wise men said they had seen the star, and they came to worship him, the one born King of the Jews.

We know Herod encouraged the magi to return to him, after having found this baby (now a toddler more likely), so that he might go and worship this new king also. They said they would, but were warned by an angel not to. So that never came to be.

It says the star went before them until they came to the place where it was over the young child. They rejoiced with exceeding joy, and when they went to the house they saw the child with his mother.

It says they then fell down and worshiped him and then opened their treasures. They presented these as gifts to the young Jesus. The treasures were gold, frankincense and myrrh. (See Matthew Chapter 2, verses 1-11.)

What kind of gifts are suitable for such a king? The wise men thought that gold frankincense and myrrh were good ideas. Many have shared that they have deeper meaning than what you may initially think. These are not necessarily suitable gifts for a baby, even a baby king. There is obviously great worth in them.

Gold - Gold is obviously a very costly and precious metal. Some church/biblical scholars have said the deeper meaning may be the love of Christ as King of the whole world. On a more practical level, some have said that the gold would have been an immediate monetary help for what may have been the impoverished parents of Jesus. (Soon to be on the run, hiding from Herod.) Mary and Joseph had already been through so much together and much more was in store.

Frankincense - an aromatic resin from the bark of African trees. It is valued for its incense, a very sweet spice. Some have said it to be like a prayer of Christ as King of the heavens. On a practical level, it would be a wonderful scent, and we are unaware of how long they were in a stable setting where animals at the very least, used to live.

Myrrh - Also an aromatic resin from the bark of African trees. Myrrh is from a thorny type of tree. It could symbolize the future sufferings of Jesus as a sacrifice. On a pragmatic level, the myrrh could deter any vermin, one person said, if they were still in a "stable" setting. You can get myrrh in an essential oil form also. I imagine this is what they used for the embalming when they used it.

We see in artistic renderings, these gifts being presented in very beautiful containers. We sometimes see what looks like a small casket shaped container for the gold, a vessel for the frankincense, and an urn containing the myrrh.

The sweet fragrances included, have often been thought to be looking forward towards when they would embalm Jesus after his death. They did wrap his body, and they often used spices and different things in this process. While they wouldn't have used these exact ones, it is often symbolic to people of what was to come.

The 3 Gifts Turn Into Folklore, Yet Never Lose Their Meaning.

Over time, we see a development where the three gifts given to Jesus translated over into giving three gifts to children on Three Kings Day. In many areas, this duty fell to Santa Claus, or St. Nicholas or even some other "person."

The three Kings from the East and their gifts from long ago still are spoken of today and celebrated. In Spain and America and many other places, we still see the original gifts of love and devotion practiced. Its become a universal thing, and I am so thankful that it has. Families world over at the very least, enjoy a time together, celebrating in different ways.
